Camp Lewa Girls Are We
Camp Lewa Girls Are We is my love letter to both my niece Katherine, and to Camp Wohelo where I went for nine summers. I continue to love camp, because now I understand what it gave to me. Camp is where I learned who I am, or who I wanted to be. It allowed me to try and fail, and try again, all in a safe space with support from incredible women. I still have the camp friends I made in 1982, and the years that followed. I know how lucky I am.
JESS
I never knew I had it in me to be creative. It wasn't until insomnia and a This Old House Magazine changed my perspective. I read an article about turning a door into a headboard. It took me months, but I did it. From there I launched Wicked Crafty, and made tables and headboards for friends. At some point I transitioned to cutting boards and clocks, then driftwood trees.
Like many people, I thought I had a book in me somewhere. When my sister announced Katherine, my niece, was going to camp, I knew what my book was. It is the story of going to camp in 1982, from the perspective of 10-year-old Jess. I made some things up, I changed some names, and I glossed over a night on the houseboat. In the end, I hope Katherine loves the book. That was my goal.
